Flight Over Duckworth, oil on canvas

Flight Over Duckworth, Oil on Canvas; © Jennifer Pohl

I just found out that this painting which is part of the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador’s permanent collection will be part of the opening exhibit at The Rooms at the end of the month. I’m happy that it has found such a good home.

If you would like a better look, and can’t make it to the opening and enjoy the free wine, a more detailed view of this painting will soon be seen in my upcoming online gallery.

Thanks Ken. I think. The photographic quality may have more to do with it being a really huge piece that is now very tiny and smooth on the screen. There is a bit of letting go involved: I’m learning to accept that most detail, and especially texture (there is a lot in this piece) doesn’t translate well to a digital file which averages all the nuances out. There’s that and the fact that colour is different on almost every browser. Even so, I love the thought of giving each piece a life outside of itself.

I made it out to the Rooms yesterday and finally saw Flight over Duckworth for the first time. Very nice! There were some other people enjoying it, and one girl in particular was especially gushing over it. She called you a photo-realist, if you can dig that.

I was tempted to write “Visit jenniferpohl.com” on the wall next to it, but didn’t.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen this painting in the flesh, and am really looking forward to visiting The Rooms myself. I don’t think of myself as a photo-realist or in terms of any other label, but I’ll take that in the spirit it was intended and be thankful for the compliment. I work from many different sources: life, photographs, dreams, urges and feelings, but if I have one formula it is this: to avoid formula.

I very much like your night series! I view work online as a seperate artpiece than in its own dimension. The distortion of texture and colour can be disheartening otherwise. I’m now finding I am creating an artpiece out of an artwork and manipulating further. It is the main reason for my not selling on the web.

fyi i have never…….ever….. commented on a blog but i feel compelled to do so now…..i visit here from time to time because your work feels so………. sincere……….i don’t know what that means really but its better than the apathy that i have felt as of late……..and truthfully i don’t really want to label it away and diminish it ,so all i’ll do is feel it and say please continue to…………continue.

Thank you everybody, and especially thank you big thinker for taking the time to post. That is a big compliment. I believe what an artist may lack in talent they can always make up for in sincerity… the rest will follow in time.
