Pears in Karmic Space

Pears in Karmic Space, Oil on Masonite; © Jennifer Pohl

This may be a bit of a stretch for my first Illustration Friday post, but if there is karma to be found, it would be that shortly after I painted it I became very pear shaped myself. Pears in Karmic Space was my last oil painting completed before becoming pregnant with Conor, and for the sake of his health I have started working with egg tempera. This image is borrowed from the Christina Parker Gallery. I hope to have a better scan soon with more detail for my upcoming online gallery.

Yikes, that’s delicious! I get good karma just looking at this…beautiful color, subtle yet rich, and great shapes created by the shadows. Yummy, indeed.

It’s only about 18″ by 12″, but there is a lot more detail than the image shows (dark oil paintings are pretty hard to translate.) More so than other pieces I’ve done, this may have worked well in egg tempera because of the number of layers of glaze, optical mixing, and the level of detail. I have a huge learning curve ahead of me, but it’s one I’m pretty exited about. There is nothing like working in a new medium for shaking things up.

This is outstanding. I love the play of light and dark, the shadows against the substance of the pears, and most of all the brilliant color of the pears themselves. Wonderful!
