This painting was done over ten years ago for my first solo show, but evokes a dream I had only last week: I had fallen asleep nursing our baby and, in my dream, awoke to find an intruder trying to break into the window behind us.

Voice (detail)I couldn’t speak or move. (I think the term people use for this is the old hag.) I kept trying to cry out, but my voice wouldn’t work. Eventually I woke myself up crying out something I can’t now remember. Luckily, Conor continued to sleep peacefully, dreaming about those things that happy babies must. Of course, in real life our trusty dog would alert half the neighborhood if any silly person ever dared try such a stunt.

“Old hag” is the Newfoundland term for the experience, and I’ve experienced it myself. In other parts it’s known as night terrors. I just then googled it and lo and behold there’s information available at http://www.nightterrors.org/.

There are a few terms as the description - Old Hag is one of them and it doesn’t always happen at night! I can see the tension of such a dream in her face!!!! Also love your golden brushstrokes :)

I’m sure many others have had this dream - it must be a fear ingrained in the human psyche. I like the fact that you’ve chosen to take a more darker direction on this topic.

Wow…you really captured the feeling you described in your dream! That face is amazing. It looks so terrified as if it’s receding into an abyss with all the yellow space and swirls around it. The feeling I get is one of being totally overwhelmed and powerless. You do great work!

Something similar happened to me four years ago and I will never forget it. The big difference is that I think I was awake and there were these shadow figures holding me down and I tried to scream out and nothing. I tried to move to wake up my [then] boyfriend but could not. It was the scariest thing that’s ever happened to me.

Great illo!

Superb illustration. I’ve had that happen, the dream where you can’t speak and you wake yourself up, terrified. Spooky and frustrating. For me it happens when I’m feeling frustrated about a situation. I think its my unconscious mind cleansing itself.

Hello, thanks for your kind words on my blog.

And oh my goodness, I’m glad I came to your site. What exciting art. I’ll be visiting again.

As for the dream…I discovered this in the book, “Women who run with the wolves,” by Clarissa M. Pinkola, that nearly all women have a similar dream, except with many women it’s a ‘dark man’, a shadow.

The writer goes on to explain why we have that dream. Very interesting. I think as an artist you might appreciate that book.

Incredibly powerful. Very disturbing, the eyes speak of pure terror. Very twisted:)

blog day

Today is Blog Day 2005, chosen because you can read the date, 31 Aug, a.k.a., 3108 as the word Blog (makes more sense if you look at the graphic). The main point is to recommend five new blogs, or

I’m sorry I missed Blog Day! I’ll mark it in my calender for next year. It’s a great idea. Not much time to post or surf this week. Doug’s been keeping the computer tied up getting ready for the big launch of diyplanner.com on Saturday, and I’ve been painting every moment I can fit in around the baby.

re: I kept trying to cry out, but my voice wouldn’t work

I remember having dreams like that when younger. Always wondered why when in dreams we are running away from monsters we can barely move or even utter a word, let alone scream.
