Thank you! (-: It’s the memory of time with my grandfather when I was about six or seven. We lived in Jersey in the Channel Islands for about nine years, and this was the one time my grandparents were able to visit from Newfoundland. I grew up on the beach drawing in the sand and jumping waves. I’m still on an island which is very close to my heart, but it’s not quite as warm and sandy. I painted this some time ago and almost wish I could repaint portions, but there is still something I enjoy about it.

This one seems rather “loose” for you. It really conveys a feeling of memory. Something fleeting that you try to capture but can never exactly re-create. It’s lovely.

I’ll admit this was an art school piece so I’ve come a long way in the past decade, but there is a feeling of openess and playfulness in this early painting that I’d like to hold onto in my work. I don’t often get a chance to see my older work in the flesh, so it’s useful for me to look at paintings on the blog. To see what works and what doesn’t… what I’d like to keep and where I want to go with it next. It’s always an evolution. Some painters say they feel like they are painting the same painting over all their life, but that isn’t for me.

I’m also happy to see some people from Newfoundland are starting to post! Welcome.
